During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
