Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
